The Hidden Challenge for the Superstar Leader
The Challenge
You hear accolades frequently.
"You're the best."
"I love working with/for you."
"You always come through."
"You really know your stuff."
"I can always depend on you."
So, what's the challenge?
Doesn't everyone want to hear those words?
Don't those words indicate that you should keep doing what you're doing?
Yes, AND . . .
What if you want to hand off some work, ask for volunteers and no one steps up because they secretly believe they can't do the work as well as you?
What if you ask for ideas and no one speaks up because they're sure you're way ahead of them?
What if you offer additional job resources and someone continues to suffer under a heavy workload because they don't want to disappoint you?
What if your "brightness" actually intimidates others?
The Remedy
Be aware that your brightness may overshadow others.
This is not about dimming your light, but recognizing it's impact.
Demonstrate your humanity regularly.
Share what challenges you're facing and what setbacks you've encountered.
Step back and let others step up.
This means lightening your grip on control and allowing others to discover a process that works for them.
Encourage others to work together without you.
It'll be easier for them to discover each other's brightness.
Shine the light on others.
Recognize others when they step up and remind them of their uniqueness.
And here's the big one-
Always share the credit (and do it generously).
You didn't become Superstar by yourself.
So be sure to collectively celebrate all along the results journey.
The Truth
Your brightness may intimidate others without you realizing it.
Everyone has a light that can shine if it's uncovered.
Your calling as a leader is to help others uncover their light.
