The Pressure to Get it Right

The Challenge

You’re passionate about what you do. Being successful is important to you. You want your team and organization to make a positive difference for your clients.

In your leadership role you: 

  • Feel responsible for results without having direct control.

  • Are the go-to person when there are no easy answers.

  • Are the one expected to communicate swiftly and effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Are counted on to always be cool, calm and accurate or risk damaging the trust of those you lead.


So, yeah, there’s pressure to get everything right - all the time - all at once. And when (not if) you don’t, you feel discouraged.
 

The Remedy 

  • Take a breathe and set reasonable expectations for yourself.

  • Adjust priorities.

  • Dispel the myth that you must have all the answers.

  • Get comfortable asking questions - lots of them.

  • Be honest about what you know and what you don’t know.

  • Lean into your strengths - and towards those of others.

  • Share your thinking.

  • Invite people to problem solve with you.

  • Acknowledge mistakes and apologize, when necessary.

  • Offer a generous interpretation for the words and actions of others.

 The Truth

  • You won’t get it right all the time.

  • Expecting perfection is a set up for disappointment.

  • Humility, transparency and appreciation will help release the pressure and allow you to lead from your best self.
