The Exquisite Gift of Presence

It's Sunday morning and I'm enjoying a cup of tea before going to my office to write. Publishing a weekly blog is a commitment I've made to myself and to my clients, associates and friends. But this morning is different.

Just as I'm about to rise from the living room couch, Brody, our almost 12 year old orange tabby cat, crawls into my lap. As you can see from the picture, Brody is wearing a soft e collar. That's because he's been injured due to some overly rambunctious play with his brother. The collar prevents him from licking the wound which could lead to more irritation, and potentially, infection.

At that moment, I recognize I have a choice. I could remove him gently from my lap and proceed to my office or I could stay present with him as he seeks comfort and warmth. In that moment, I chose to be present with Brody. To hold him gently, stroke his face and allow him to rest in my lap.

Being present isn't as easy as it may seem.

While holding Brody, my mind was ruminating on my to-do list and my plans for later in the day. Each time my mind wandered, I would remind myself that to be present for another living being is a gift and an honor.

Dear leader, I know that you almost always have a long to-do list and many challenges, both expected and unexpected. I also know that there will be many opportunities for you to be present with those you lead.

- A team member who needs some extra attention.

- A client who needs a listening ear.

- A stakeholder who wants to share a celebration with you.

Today, I invite you to join me in creating the conscious space needed to recognize these opportunities as soon as they arrive.

- Notice the person who seems to be distracted.

- Respond when someone meets your gaze.

- Acknowledge the sounds of laughter and concern.

Your to-do list will still be there and your challenges may remain, but the gift of presence is exquisite for both the giver and the receiver.
